Magical Picnic Point Outdoor Winter Wedding

Filed in Wedding — December 5, 2024

I had the delight of officiating one of the most memorable December weddings. From the very beginning, their wedding stood out as unique and special. This was a small, intimate gathering with just close family members. The couple planned this ceremony as a precursor to their more significant, more elaborate celebration in India a couple of weeks later. Despite its simplicity, this event was rich with meaning, warmth, and thoughtful details, creating an unforgettable experience for everyone present.

As an officiant, it is always a privilege to witness the love and connection between couples; this ceremony was no exception. The intimate setting allowed for deeply personal vows and heartfelt moments that will forever be etched in the memories of those who attended. Their words to each other were filled with love, respect, and a promise to continue supporting one another in all their endeavors. These touching exchanges served as a reminder of the true purpose of a wedding—to celebrate the union of two people ready to embark on a lifelong journey together.

A Frosty Wedding at Picnic Point

Located at Picnic Point on the University of Wisconsin campus as the site for their ceremony. This picturesque location, with its breathtaking views of Lake Mendota, was the perfect backdrop for their sunrise wedding. Transitioning into the winter morning, the natural beauty of the snow-dusted landscape added a magical touch to the proceedings. The decision to hold the ceremony at sunrise was intentional and symbolic, representing a fresh start and the dawn of their new life together.

Thoughtful Details for a Winter Ceremony

Understanding the challenges of an outdoor winter wedding, the couple went above and beyond to ensure their guests’ comfort. They thoughtfully provided a cozy campfire, steaming hot tea, and soft lap robes to keep everyone warm. These small but significant gestures demonstrated their consideration and love for their family members who braved the cold to witness this beautiful occasion. Such thoughtful planning also helped create an atmosphere of warmth and closeness despite the chilly temperatures.

Speaking of the cold, it was one of the frostiest weddings I have ever attended. On their wedding day, the temperature was in the teens, and I remember the ground was covered with a delicate dusting of snow. I wore two layers of long underwear under my attire to prepare for the ceremony—a first for me as an officiant! Despite the cold, the love and joy radiating from the couple kept the spirits high. Their warmth and happiness were contagious, and it was heartwarming to see their family members bundled up and smiling as they celebrated this special moment together.

Transitioning to the ceremony, the timeline flowed seamlessly, thanks to their careful planning. The day began with guests gathering around the crackling campfire, sipping hot tea to relieve the cold. The couple went to the ceremony site as the first rays of sunlight broke through the horizon. The sight of the sunrise reflecting off the snow created a breathtaking moment that felt almost otherworldly. The event’s timing was impeccable, and much thought was apparent in every detail.

Capturing Beauty in Every Moment

The setting at Picnic Point also offered unique challenges and opportunities for the couple’s photographer, Laura Zastrow. As always, Laura did an outstanding job capturing the essence of the wedding day. Her photographs showcased the beauty of the couple’s love story and the stunning winter scenery surrounding them. From candid moments by the campfire to breathtaking portraits against the backdrop of Lake Mendota, Laura’s work truly brought the day to life. Each image serves as a timeless reminder of the love and joy that permeated the ceremony.

A Wedding to Warm the Coldest Day

One of the most memorable parts of the ceremony was the exchange of rings. Despite the freezing temperatures, the couple handled the moment with grace and humor. The rings, chilled by the cold, symbolized their commitment and bond strength. This small but significant detail added a touch of lightheartedness to the proceedings, and the laughter that followed warmed everyone’s hearts.

After the ceremony, the group lingered for a while, enjoying the warmth of the campfire and each other’s company. The intimate nature of the gathering allowed for genuine connections and heartfelt conversations. Clearly, the families were deeply supportive of their union, and the joy they shared was palpable. This sense of togetherness added another layer of meaning to the day, making it even more special.

As we wrapped up the event, I couldn’t help but reflect on how perfectly this wedding encapsulated their personalities and values. Their decision to prioritize an intimate and meaningful ceremony over a grand spectacle spoke volumes about their character. They managed to create a day that was not only beautiful but also deeply personal and reflective of their love story. It was a testament to the idea that weddings, at their core, are about celebrating love and connection.

A Day Rooted in Love and Commitment

The story behind the couple’s relationship made this wedding particularly special. Both are passionate triathletes who share a love for adventure, endurance, and personal growth. Their shared interests and values were evident in how they approached their wedding day—with intention, resilience, and a focus on what truly mattered. This commitment to meaningful experiences over extravagant details resonated throughout the entire event.

This sunrise wedding at Picnic Point was a truly remarkable experience. From the stunning winter setting to the heartfelt moments shared with their family, every aspect of the day was thoughtfully planned and beautifully executed. Their love and commitment shone brightly, even in the coldest temperatures, and their story inspired all fortunate enough to witness it. As an officiant, I am honored to have been part of such a meaningful celebration, and I will always cherish the memories of that frosty December morning.

What does Koru mean?

KORU (kor-roo) is the Maori word for “loop.” For the indigenous people of New Zealand, the koru spiral represents a fern frond beginning to unfurl. The koru symbol embodies new beginnings, a new phase of life, renewal, hope for the future, positive change, personal growth, working in harmony, bringing people together, and being mindful of the good things in life.

At Koru Ceremony, we strive to personify these ideals and celebrate a new beginning through ceremony and ritual.
