Welcome to the Koru Blog

Sara Baillies Photography

I saw this post from last year on Koru Ceremony’s Facebook page and thought it would be helpful to share…  My husband and I were recently in San Francisco and saw these fern korus at the deYoung Museum.  A koru is a new fern frond as it begins to unfurl. The word “koru” (pronounced kor-roo) is the […]

Whenever someone is upset or sad, our natural response may be to try and cheer that person up. But that can be problematic in a romantic relationship. The tricky part with empathy is that it isn’t about trying to lift your partner’s, or anyone’s, spirits. It’s about validating the emotions that they feel, and understanding why […]

Dr. John Gottman has an interesting bit of advice for couples. He says, “Don’t leave home without a kiss that lasts six seconds.” Kissing does wonders for you; it releases oxytocin, which makes you feel a sense of comfort and bonding, and dopamine, which activates your brain’s reward center. Those butterflies in your stomach? They come from epinephrine and […]

It is always fun when I have the opportunity to marry multiple members of the same family.  Two and a half years ago I married Kelly and David at Milford Hills Hunt Club.  I will always remember their wedding day because it was also the day that my daughter went into labor with my granddaughter.  So […]

We’ve all done it. You’re enjoying dinner with your partner and you get a text message. You check it, and before you know it, you’re engrossed in your phone while your partner eats in silence, waiting for your attention. Or, at night, your partner scrolls through their Facebook feed while you’re trying to vent about your hard […]

Kate and Ryan had their wedding last October at Bishops Bay Country Club.  The ceremony was outside and may have been one of the windiest weddings I have done.  But the weather didn’t deter this adorable couple from creating a magical day.  I joked that because Kate and Ryan had a Irish themed wedding that the […]

I really like the photos that Hillary Schave from Azena Photography took at Katie and Charlie’s wedding at The Oaks Golf Course, Cottage Grove, WI. (www.azenaphoto.com and Facebook tag is @azenaphotography) I particularly love the photos from Katie and Charlie’s first look. Charlie was so emotional on his wedding day and broke down in tears when he saw […]

One of the last weddings I did in 2017 was an elopement for Shannon and Neil at Gates of Heaven. I have always said that it doesn’t matter how big or small a wedding is, it is always special and unique. I was in tears watching the video that DeGroot Film Co. put together for them. […]

What does Koru mean?

KORU (kor-roo) is the Maori word for “loop.” For the indigenous people of New Zealand, the koru spiral represents a fern frond beginning to unfurl. The koru symbol embodies new beginnings, a new phase of life, renewal, hope for the future, positive change, personal growth, working in harmony, bringing people together, and being mindful of the good things in life.

At Koru Ceremony, we strive to personify these ideals and celebrate a new beginning through ceremony and ritual.
